Enrichment

Whitstone School is committed to ensuring that all students with additional needs at both Key Stage 3 and 4 have equal access to the learning and curriculum through careful understanding of their individual needs, good quality teaching and targeted intervention and support.

A wide variety of extra-curricular activities including after school clubs, trips and visits enhance the learning experience of students at Whitstone School.  Whitstone School offers residential visits away from home, to encourage independence and self confidence, and develop life skills such as team building, money management and social interaction.  We offer cultural tours of France and Germany, ski trips and participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.  A range of after school sports clubs are also available to students and music lessons taught by specialist teachers are encouraged for students in all year groups.

Students at Whitstone School are encouraged to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

We offer a range of school clubs at Whitstone School, which you will find on our School Clubs (link to School Clubs) page.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Whitstone School offers our students a superb opportunity to do something different, get out and explore, volunteer within our community and take up a new hobby. In Year 9, we offer the Bronze Award and in Year 10, we offer the Silver Award. Training for the expeditions and the final assessed expedition take place in the local Somerset area, allowing participants to explore the area in which they live. Previous participants in the award regard these weekends as being great fun and a special opportunity to gain independence and confidence in the outdoors.

For many students the highlight of the award is the series of expeditions that we run each summer, but there is much more to the DofE than just the expeditions. In order to gain your DofE Bronze and Silver award you need to complete a minimum of three months of activities. These fall into the categories of Physical Recreation, Volunteering, Skills and Expedition. For more information about the DofE activities please see: www.dofe.org
